Emanuel Ax performs a concerto written for him by movie-soundtrack legend John Williams. Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla conducts Vaughn Williams’s Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, a shimmering exploration of the English Renaissance, and Weinberg’s Fifth Symphony, a powerful exploration of dramatic contrasts inspired by the work of Shostakovich, his friend and kindred spirit.

Artists

Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla (Conductor): Lithuanian conductor Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla is history in the making. At the 2024 Salzburger Festspiele she made her Vienna Philharmonic debut leading a new production of Weinberg’s The Idiot, and in June 2025 she becomes the first woman to conduct on that orchestra’s subscription series. Recent and upcoming highlights include returns to Sinfonieorchester Basel, Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte Carlo, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, The Philadelphia Orchestra, and Munich Philharmonic, in addition to the New York Philharmonic; debuts with Staatskapelle Dresden and at Teatro Real Madrid with a new production of Weinberg’s The Passenger; Britten’s War Requiem at Salzburger Festspiele; and a new production of Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen at Bavarian Staatsoper. Emanuel Ax (Piano): Born to Polish parents in what is today Lviv, Ukraine, Emanuel Ax moved to Winnipeg, Canada, with his family when he was a young boy. Ax made his New York debut in the Young Concert Artists Series and in 1974 won the first Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition in Tel Aviv. In 1975 he won the Michaels Award of Young Concert Artists, followed by the Avery Fisher Prize. In 2024–25 he was the soloist on the New York Philharmonic’s season opening concerts — he has performed with the Orchestra more than 100 times — and returns to The Cleveland and Philadelphia Orchestras; National, San Diego, Nashville, and Pittsburgh symphony orchestras; and Rochester Philharmonic. A recital tour culminates in the spring in Chicago and with his annual Carnegie Hall appearance. Additional performances include a special project with NY Phil Principal Clarinet Anthony McGill, chamber music with Itzhak Perlman and Friends, and an extensive European tour.
