NY Phil Ensembles in Merkin Concert Hall at Kaufman Music Center (Site)

An Ensembles concert at Merkin Hall provides an intimate connection between musicians and audience. Experience the individual talents that make up the Orchestra, and see how a small setting can make for a huge musical event. At this concert, NY Phil Musicians perform works by Frank Bridge, Shostakovich, Thomas Adès, and Dvořák.

Artists

Lisa Eunsoo Kim (Violin): Violinist Lisa Eunsoo Kim joined the New York Philharmonic in September 1994, and was named Associate Principal, Second Violin Group, in January 2003. Previously, she was with Chicago’s Grant Park Symphony Orchestra as its youngest member. She performs and teaches frequently in South Korea and the United States. She is very active in chamber music concerts throughout the world, including the New York Philharmonic Ensembles at Merkin Hall and at David Geffen Hall, Brooklyn’s Bargemusic, and Hofstra Chamber Ensemble series. Her engagements have included a performance of Stravinsky’s  L’Histoire du Soldat  with principals of the New York Philharmonic, participation in a Mostly Chamber Festival with Ani Kavafian and Carter Brey, and Lyric Chamber Music Society with Glenn Dicterow, Karen Dreyfus, Carter Brey, and Richard Bishop. She has also appeared with Stanley Drucker, Lukas Foss, Garrick Ohlsson, Yo-Yo Ma, and Lynn Harrell. She was appointed to the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music in 1999. Alina Ming Kobialka (Violin): Violinist Alina Ming Kobialka joined the New York Philharmonic in 2022. She has been praised for her beautiful tone, effortless precision, and musical maturity beyond her years. Since her first appearance as soloist at age ten, she has toured and performed with many ensembles throughout the world. San Francisco Classical Voice  described her as a “jaw-droppingly assured” soloist, who “made present and future converge,” and the  Las Vegas Review-Journal  wrote, “Watch for her name. Kyung Ji Min (Violin): Violinist Kyung Ji Min joined the New York Philharmonic in September 2019. Born in South Korea in 1995, she began playing the violin at age seven, studying with Hyuna Kim and graduating with highest honors from Yewon School, where she was concertmaster of the school orchestra. She received top prizes in national competitions and gave solo and chamber concerts as part of the Kumho Prodigy Concert series, supported by the Kumho Foundation. She came to the United States to study with Aaron Rosand and Shmuel Ashkenasi at the Curtis Institute of Music — where she served as assistant concertmaster of the Curtis Symphony Orchestra — and subsequently studied with Sylvia Rosenberg and Ronald Copes at The Juilliard School, where she served as concertmaster of the Juilliard Orchestra. She performed with the Verbier Chamber Orchestra in 2017 and has performed under the baton of conductors including Alan Gilbert, Rossen Milanov, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Gerard Schwarz, and Osmo Vänska. Su Hyun Park (Violin): Violinist Su Hyun Park joined the New York Philharmonic in September 2017. She previously served as assistant concertmaster of the Grant Park Symphony Orchestra, as well as concertmaster of the Music Alps Festival Orchestra, Juilliard Orchestra, New York Classical Players, and Music Academy of the West Orchestra. Andi Zhang (Violin): Violinist Andi Zhang joined the New York Philharmonic in January 2019 while studying at the Manhattan School of Music with Pinchas Zukerman and Patinka Kopec. She has appeared as soloist with the Beijing, Qingdao, Harbin, and Hong Kong symphony orchestras; Xiamen Philharmonic Orchestra; and Munich Radio Orchestra. She has performed in recital in the US, Canada, Germany, and Austria; recorded for film and television, CDs, and the China Central Television program  Music Tells You;   and led master classes. Tabitha Rhee (Viola): Tabitha Rhee joined the viola section of the New York Philharmonic in September 2023. She has performed with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Princeton Symphony Orchestra, APEX Ensemble, and Jupiter Symphony Chamber Players. She is the winner of the Juilliard Concerto Competition and has appeared as soloist and served as principal viola with the Juilliard Orchestra. She has also appeared as soloist with the Wisconsin Philharmonic, Madison Symphony Orchestra, and Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. Learn more about Tabitha Rhee

Cong Wu (Viola): Cong Wu joined the New York Philharmonic as Assistant Principal Viola in September 2018. He is the winner of the Third Prize and the Chamber Music Prize in the Fourteenth Primrose International Viola Competition, and the Special Prize in the Twelfth Tertis International Viola Competition. His performances throughout North America and Asia include solo appearances with the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra, New York Classical Players, and the Long Island Concert Orchestra. Matthew Christakos (Cello): Matthew Christakos joined the New York Philharmonic as Associate Principal Cello in January 2024. Originally from Toronto, he studied with Peter Wiley and Gary Hoffman at the Curtis Institute of Music, and has served as principal cello of the Curtis Symphony Orchestra, National Youth Orchestra of Canada, and Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra. Alexei Yupanqui Gonzales (Cello): Alexei Yupanqui Gonzales was appointed to the cello section of the New York Philharmonic in November 2012. He has served as the principal cellist of the Rhode Island Philharmonic and the Boston Lyric Opera. He has also been a member of the Boston Ballet Orchestra and has performed with the Boston Symphony, Boston Pops, A Far Cry Chamber Orchestra, Emmanuel Music under the late Craig Smith, and the Bach Ensemble with harpsichordist John Gibbons. John F. Lee (Cello): Cellist John F. Lee joined the New York Philharmonic in June 2024. A native of Basking Ridge, New Jersey, Lee completed a bachelor’s degree in history of science and statistics at Harvard University and a master of music degree from New England Conservatory with Laurence Lesser, part of the five-year dual-degree program. He earned a post-baccalaureate diploma from the Curtis Institute of Music under the tutelage of Peter Wiley, Gary Hoffman, and NY Phil Principal Cello Carter Brey. Qiang Tu (Cello): Chinese-born cellist Qiang Tu enjoys a multi-faceted career as a performer, teacher, and advocate for classical music. Now in his third decade as a member of the New York Philharmonic, he has also concertized as a soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician in Australia, Belgium, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom. In the United States he has performed at major venues in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, St. Louis, Honolulu, and Princeton. He has shared the stage with numerous distinguished artists including pianists Garrick Ohlsson, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and Lukas Foss; former New York Philharmonic Concertmaster Glenn Dicterow; and former Principal Clarinet Stanley Drucker. As a recording artist, Tu has released multiple solo albums on the China Record Corporation label and chamber music recordings on the Bridge Records, Cala Records, and EMI labels. A dedicated teacher, he is a member of the orchestral performance faculty at the Manhattan School of Music; early in his career he taught at the Beijing Central Conservatory. Barret Ham (Clarinet): Barret Ham, a native of Macon, Georgia, joined the New York Philharmonic as clarinet / bass clarinet in the 2023–24 season. He previously served as acting second clarinet / bass clarinet for the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra for three seasons, and has performed as a guest musician with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and The Cleveland Orchestra, as well as the Boston, Dallas, and Utah symphony orchestras. Recent summer festival appearances include Yellow Barn, the Lucerne Festival Academy, and Spoleto Festival USA. An avid chamber musician, Ham has performed for Tertulia San Francisco and as a guest with the Borromeo String Quartet. He has worked directly with composers such as Shulamit Ran, Jörg Widmann, Brett Dean, and Enno Poppe, and is a proponent of the works of living composers. He is a lecturer in clarinet at Boston University, and also teaches bass clarinet at The Juilliard School. Barret Ham received his bachelor’s degree from the New England Conservatory and his master’s degree from the University of Southern California. Eric Huebner (Piano): P ianist Eric Huebner   has drawn worldwide acclaim for his performances of new and traditional music since making his debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at age 17. In January 2012 he was appointed pianist of the New York Philharmonic and holds the Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Piano Chair. From 2001 through 2012, Huebner was a member of Antares, a quartet comprised of clarinet, violin, cello, and piano. First-prize winner of the 2002 Concert Artists Guild International Competition, Antares appeared regularly in major chamber music venues throughout the United States and worked closely with many composers on the commissioning of new works for its combination. Hanna Hyunjung Kim (Piano): Pianist Hanna Hyunjung Kim has won top prizes at several international piano competitions, including Gina Bachauer, Asia Chopin, Taipei Chopin, Hamamatsu International, Rhodes International, and Seoul International. She also received both second prize and the special jury award at the 2010 Paderewski International Piano Competition. In 2016 she won first prize at Japan’s Sendai International Music Competition. As part of this prize she recorded and released performances of Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 19 with the Sendai Philharmonic Orchestra. Kim has collaborated with conductors such as Kazuki Yamada, Shao-Chia Liu, and Tatsuya Shimono; with orchestras such as the Osaka Philharmonic, Japan Philharmonic, and Hiroshima Symphony; and performed at venues such as Tokyo Metropolitan Hall, Tokyo Hamarikyu Asahi Hall, and Taiwan National Concert Hall. She completed her bachelor’s degree at Korea National University of Arts and later received a full scholarship to attend the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, where she earned her master’s of music degree and artist diploma.
